There are two parts to every tooth: the crown and the root. With dental implants, the root is made of titanium, which is placed into the gum to form a secure foundation. The crown (or replacement tooth) is fitted on top to create a comfortable, life-like replacement.

How can dental implants permanently replace your missing teeth?

There are many ways to replace tooth crowns, but only dental implants can replace the entire tooth including both crown and root. Dental implants really are the next best thing to having your own teeth. Leaving the missing tooth space empty may not sound too serious, but the consequences of not filling in the space from the missing tooth could mean movement of your other teeth or eventual shrinkage of your jawbone.

What does treatment involve?

A number of different types of implants and techniques exist with dental implant therapy. At Westdale Dental, we assess each individual case in great detail to find the right treatment option for you. As a patient, your options will be fully discussed with you and a treatment plan established to reflect your unique needs. The length of your treatment can range from 8 to 12 months depending on the complexity of your care.

Aftercare and maintenance?

With proper care and attention, dental implants can last for many years. Just like natural teeth, they need to be regularly serviced and maintained to ensure optimum oral health care, including healthy gums and a fresh breath.

You will be requested to attend a number of review appointments to enable your dentist to carry out routine examinations of your dental implants, as well as to make any adjustments that might be necessary.

Having dental implants may also mean that there will be areas of your mouth that you find a bit more difficult to clean than usual. Frequent visits to your hygienist will ensure that you benefit from a professional clean and helpful advice, helping you to make the most of your perfect new smile.
